Everlasting Covenant

"Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow." (II Samuel 23: 1-5 KJV)

"Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David." (Isaiah 55: 3 KJV)

"Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." (Hebrews 13: 20, 21 KJV)

From these verses we learn something about the "everlasting covenant," the "covenant of grace," or the "new covenant."

We learn that salvation is connected with this eternal covenant. We learn that it is made with sinners and that in two ways. First, the covenant was made between God and Christ, wherein Christ stood as a legal representative for those who are named in the covenant. Second, the covenant is also made personally with every repenting sinner when he is converted to, and covenants with, Christ.

Covenants contain promises and so does the everlasting covenant. God promises, in this covenant, to "forgive sins," and to bestow unending blessings of joy and peace, and of eternal life.

Have you made a covenant with God? Have you agreed with him?
