Walking With God

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" (Micah 6: 8)

Can anything be better or more glorious than to walk with God? If God exists, would it not be something truly amazing and wonderful to walk with him? Would it not be even more awesome to both walk and talk with him? To have close fellowship with the Almighty?

What does it mean to "walk with God"? Is that possible, in any sense, even now in this life?

Walking with God is supremely uplifting and delightful, and therefore ought to be a choice men "jump at the chance" of enjoying, and ought not to be thought of as a "requirement," yet it is that which God demands of his rational creatures. Actually, all are both invited and commanded to walk with Lord God.

Walking with God requires a humble attitude, according to the prophet. We walk with God, in the way he is going, in his paths; he does not join us in our walk, to walk with us in our sins, but we join him in his walkings.

"And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden." (Genesis 3: 8)

Adam and Eve, the parents of the human race, originally walked with God and enjoyed close communion and fellowship with Lord God, while they were in the Garden of Eden, and before their rebellion against their Maker. When they transgressed the law of God, despising his goodness, distrusting his word, they instantly "saw their nakedness" and their shame, so that when Lord God came "walking in the Garden," this time they ran from him, whereas before, they no doubt quickly ran to him. This is the state of the sinner - running away from Lord God, attempting to cover the shame of their sin. Sinful man walks away from Lord God rather than walks with him.

"And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. " (Genesis 5: 22-24)

"Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God." (Genesis 6: 9)

What an epithet to put over one's tombstone! What a non-verbose, straight to the point, narration of the biography of a righteous man! To say of a man, after he is dead, "he walked with God," is the greatest of all testimonies, the highest tribute. A man could have a hundred page eulogy given by the greatest of personages, at his funeral, and yet this one phrase - "he walked with God," would say much more.

It may be a glorious tribute to say that such a man, while he lived, walked with great men, such as with presidents and governors, with rich and famous men, but to say a man walked with God, is of the highest glory. To "rub shoulders with" the Almighty is a magnificent thing indeed.

"And I set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. " (Leviticus 26: 11, 12)

Such is the will of God towards his creatures. Even though Adam and Eve had sinned, and dreaded walking with God, while in their sinful shameful condition, yet Lord God still desired to walk with them, and provided means whereby that walk and fellowship could be restored. Lord God is "walking among" people today! "God is not far from everyone of us," said Paul to the Athenians. (Acts 17: 27) Some are aware of it, others are not. Some join God in his walk through the earth and among the people. Some do not, but join the walk with evil men and walk with wicked spirits. (Ephesians 2: 2) Lord God, like Wisdom, "utters his voice in the streets" (Proverbs 1: 20), and bids men to come walk with him and with Wisdom.

"And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." (II Corinthians 6: 16)

"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3: 3)

A man who walks with God is in agreement with God. He has "peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5: 1) He has been "reconciled to God by the death of his Son" (verse 10). He has become a "friend of God" (James 2: 23), as was Abraham, and a "friend" of the Lord Jesus Christ. (John 15: 13, 14)

"God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord." (I Corinthians 1: 9)

"That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ." (I John 1: 3)

"If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth" (verse 6).

There is an age coming, a glorious age, where Lord God will superbly and visibly walk with people, as he did in the Garden of Eden, and as he did when here in the person of Christ, his eternal Son.

Friend, do you know God and walk with him? Communion with the Almighty is a reality for millions of Christians. Would you not like to join us in our walk with Lord God? You can in spirit walk with him now and have the blessed assurance of yet more glorious walks with God in the "world to come."

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he (sup) with me." (Revelation 3: 20)
